Hidden in the forested hills of Ukiha City, about an hour southeast of Fukuoka, Ukiha Inari Shrine is one of Kyushu's most breathtaking and least-visited sacred sites — a cascading corridor of vermillion torii gates climbing the mountainside, each one donated by a worshipper as an act of gratitude to Inari Okami, the Shinto deity of harvest and fortune. Unlike the crowds of Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, Ukiha greets you with quiet — just the wind through the gates, moss-covered fox guardians watching from the sides of the path, and at the top, a sweeping view of the Chikugo River plain that makes the climb completely worth it. Whether you visit in spring when the surrounding orchards are in bloom, or in autumn when the hillsides turn gold against the red of the gates, Ukiha Inari Shrine is the kind of place that reminds you why you traveled to Japan in the first place — and with GoFukuoka's private day tours, getting there is the easiest part.
